Ultraviolet (UV) rays are electromagnetic radiation from the sun, with wavelengths shorter than visible light but longer than X-rays.

Types of UV rays:

  1. UVA (320-400 nm): Penetrates deep into skin, causing aging and wrinkles.
  2. UVB (290-320 nm): Primarily responsible for sunburn and skin cancer.
  3. UVC (100-290 nm): Absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere, not reaching the surface.

Effects of UV rays:

  1. Skin damage and cancer
  2. Premature aging
  3. Eye damage (cataracts, macular degeneration)
  4. Immune system suppression
  5. DNA damage

Protection from UV rays:

  1. Wear protective clothing and hats
  2. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+)
  3. Seek shade, especially during peak hours (10am-4pm)
  4. Wear UV-blocking sunglasses
  5. Avoid tanning beds

UV rays also have beneficial effects:

  1. Vitamin D production in skin
  2. Disinfection and sterilization
  3. Medical treatments (phototherapy)
